Oral lesions diseases – therapeutic approaches and risk management.

The oral mucosa is subject to various influences – mechanical, physical, chemical, thermal, acute and chronic trauma, etc. All of these can lead to diseases with different clinical characteristics. Depending on the nature of the etiological factors, they are divided into primary (as a result of trauma, thermal effects, harmful habits, etc.) or secondary (as a result of systemic diseases, intake of various medications, allergies, toxicosis, etc.).

Therefore, diagnosing and treating aphthous lesions poses a challenge for every dentist. In many cases, the clinical presentation of the lesions is accompanied by manifestations of inflammation and its classic clinical symptoms. All of this can lead to difficulty in eating, swallowing, speaking, loss of taste, etc.

In many cases, the differential diagnosis of oral mucosal diseases is difficult. In the case of persistent aphthae, with a history of chronic use of cigarettes, alcohol and other harmful substances, the development of various neoplasms should also be considered.

Local therapy includes a number of hygienic, therapeutic and prophylactic measures. Such as the use of local protective agents, management of pain and discomfort, creation of favourable environment for healing, etc.

Adequate treatment and prevention approaches should lead to a faster recovery process, and hence to a better quality of life.

Making an accurate and correct diagnosis, as well as creating an adequate treatment plan, should be evidence-based. Everything said so far is the gateway to a successful treatment. Many of the listed challenges facing dental practitioners are also related to controlling and managing a number of risks.

The lecture discusses the risks associated with errors in making a correct and accurate diagnosis. It also presents different treatment approaches and the making of certain errors that can put the patient at risk. Risk management in these cases aims to prevent possible complications.
