Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw in dental practice and oral surgery.

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw represents a serious challenge in daily dental and surgical practice. The increasing number of patients taking medications that affect bone metabolism represents an increasingly frequent event in the clinical practice of the dentist.

Performing dental procedures on such patients requires specific knowledge of drug metabolism. The demands of patients are increasing and pose new challenges to the dentist.

This presentation aims to provide dental practitioners with information on the behavior of patients on antiresorptive medication therapy and patients at risk of developing drug-related osteonecrosis of the jaw. The clinical cases presented are tailored to outpatient practice and do not include severe problems requiring hospital treatment. Existing recommendations for prophylaxis and behavior in patients on antiresorptive therapy will be critically discussed.
