Modern endodontics

Modern endodontics represents a significant evolution in dental care, combining advanced technologies and evidence-based practices to enhance treatment success and patient outcomes. This lecture provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamental aspects of contemporary endodontic therapy, focusing on four critical pillars: diagnosis, conservative shaping, irrigation, and three-dimensional obturation with bioactive materials.

Accurate diagnosis is the cornerstone of successful endodontic treatment, involving thorough clinical and radiographic evaluations to identify pathology and guide treatment planning. Advances in imaging technologies, such as cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), have revolutionized diagnostic capabilities, offering detailed insights into complex cases.

Conservative shaping techniques are emphasized to preserve the structural integrity of the tooth while ensuring adequate access for cleaning and disinfection. Innovations in instrumentation, including the use of flexible and minimally invasive files, have transformed the approach to canal preparation, reducing procedural errors and enhancing outcomes.

Irrigation remains a pivotal step in achieving effective disinfection. The lecture explores current irrigation protocols and the role of adjunctive devices in improving the removal of biofilms and debris. Advanced solutions, such as activated irrigation systems, contribute to superior microbial control within the root canal system.

Finally, the lecture delves into the importance of three-dimensional obturation using bioactive materials. These materials not only provide a durable seal but also encourage healing and tissue regeneration. Techniques such as warm vertical compaction and bioceramic-based obturation are highlighted for their role in achieving predictable and long-lasting results.
