Principles for regenerating the atrophic alveolar ridge: from single tooth to full arch.

Osseointegration as a concept was introduced several decades ago (Brånemark et al. 1969). During these decades, implant dentistry has advanced and nowadays it is a common, predictable and successful treatment option in the rehabilitation of partially and completely edentulous patients, providing reliable long-term results. However, the correct placement of dental implants can be more complex or even impossible in certain cases due to alveolar atrophy and extensive bone defects resulting from various reasons such as periodontal disease. In such conditions, setting the location of dental implants in the precise 3-dimensional (3D) role is nearly not possible due to substantial adjustments in each vertical and horizontal bone dimensions, thus negatively affecting right prosthetic reconstruction. Several techniques and bone grafting substances have been proposed to overcome this problem by increasing the width and height of the atrophic alveolar ridge. Bone regeneration/regeneration is a modern and biological method that allows the regeneration of hard tissues in order to restore the dimensions of the atrophic alveolar ridge. This presentation will focus on the surgical reconstruction techniques depending of the bone defects in each case, as well as the biomaterials that can be used for a predictable, long term and aesthetic result.

From 2002 to 2005 he did his postgraduate studies and his specialization in Periodontology and dental implants at the University of Minnesota, USA (University of Minnesota Division of Periodontology Department of Developmental and Surgical Sciences Minneapolis USA.)

In 2005 he obtained the title of Master of Science in Oral Biology from the same University (Graduate School / University of Minnesota / Dental School Minneapolis USA)

From 2008 until June 2023 he was a scientific associate in the postgraduate program at the department of Preventive Dentistry, Periodontology and Implant Biology, AUTH, and from September 2019 until June 2023 he was an Academic Fellow in the same department. In July 2023, he received the position of the Assistant professor at the Laboratory of Preventive Dentistry, Periodontology and Implant Biology, AUTH

He maintains a private practice in Thessaloniki since 2005. The practice specializes in Periodontology, Dental implants, hard and soft tissue regeneration techniques. He is a speaker and trainer of practical seminars for the Hellenic Society of Periodontology, as well as for various implant and bone graft companies in Greece as well as in Cyprus and Turkey
Finally, he is on the board of directors of the Hellenic Society of Periodontology and implant dentistry from 2021 and  he has the honor of being secretary general of the same society.
Research Area:
The research interest is focused on experimental study in laboratory animals in the field of periodontitis of hard and soft tissue regeneration and the use of autologous growth factors.
