Endodntic treatment – mishaps and complications

Treatment plan in cases of pathology of endodontic origin includes a specific clinical protocol for the respective nosological unit. Following this protocol strictly will allow the dentist to achieve better clinical results with good short- and long-term prognosis. Treatment outcome will be influenced negatively by any mishap and complication which may appear in every single stage of the endodontic therapy. In most of the cases, these situations are due to the individual characteristics of the patient and the tooth and, on other hand due to the practitioner. The need of detailed interpretation of the information found in the anamnesis, clinical and paraclinical examinations as well as the treatment methods and techniques are crucial for the final result.

The periapical healing process may be altered by procedural mistakes such as separated instrument, ledges or perforation. Contemporary endodontic methods and instruments are usually helpful in overcoming these problems. On the other hand, negligence in the diagnostic part of the treatment or the procedures of the final functional restoration may possibly undermine the overall decision for conservative clinical approach.

The treatment outcome in cases of mishaps and complications are mostly dependent on the clinician’s skills and approach. Good clinical experience and thorough theoretical background of the dentist as well as the ability to predict a possible negative outcome of the treatment are the premise to prevent or to manage any critical clinical situation.
