Application of a locally delivered antibacterial product as adjunctive therapy in the surgical treatment of peri-implantitis (Clinical case)
Peri-implantits is one of the prerequisites for the failure in the treatment of the rehabilitation of the dentition and is a cause of the loss of 16-20 percent of the osteointegrated implants. The failure of the implant treatment can be connected with insufficient volume of the soft or hard tissues, bad prosthetic elements and loading, bad surgical protocol, non-satisfactory oral hygiene and others.
Aim: To save the implant in the posterior region.
Materials and methods: A 41 year old female patient came to the Periodontology department in the Faculty of dental medicine in the Medical University of Plovdiv, complaining of bleeding in the area of an implant in the posterior area. After the clinical examination we established a lot of bone loss arount the implant. Results: We removed the abutment, opened a flap and removed all of the calculus and the debris arount the implant using Er-Yag laser. After that we applied antibiotic agent as adjunctive antibacterial treatment. After finishing with the decontamination of the implant surface we did bone regeneration.
Conclusion: Nowadays using implants for restoration of the mouth arch is very common and thus is the peri-implantitis. That is why it is very important to know how to treat such patients and to use different approaches for decontamination of the implant surfaces.
