Rubber dam application and Access Cavity: 2 important steps to control the infection and to get a respectful shaping of the root canal system.

Shaping, cleaning and filling of the root canal system are essential phases of orthograde root canal treatment to get the success of the therapy, but they are not the only stages of the RCT. A proper shaping, cleaning and filling depends even on a proper access and on a high level of infection control. The Infection Control in Endodontics and Restorative Dentistry is really important to get a positive outcome of the therapy. Infection Control in Endodontics, is often associated to the Cleaning during the treatment; cleaning is an important stage of the Endodontic treatment ad it means the removal of bacteria from the root canal system, but it’s just one out two components of the Infection Control. The second one is the Asepsis and it’s at least as important as the Cleaning. Asepsis means to prevent bacteria contaminate the root canal system and the operator do take care of the Asepsis for the whole treatment. A good Asepsis increases the efficiency of the Cleaning in Endodontics and prevents an early failure due to microleakage in Restorative Dentistry, never forgetting even that prevents transmission of virus as the coronavirus through aerosols formed during medical procedures. A proper and functional access is needed to get a respectful shaping of the root canal system as it’s even important to reduce the stress on the NiTi rotary file, preventing separation of the file itself. Aim of the lecture is to go deep in protocols useful to get a proper Infection Control during Endodontic treatment even in complex cases, and to understand the advantages of working through a proper access cavity.
